The Ikebana
Alphabet
Book
The Ikebana Alphabet Book is an abecedarian marrying colorful abstract illustrations of English letterforms inspired by Ikebana arrangements with haiku. Both ikebana and haiku are ancient arts built around ideologies of being sparing yet deliberate. The Ikebana Alphabet Book is an exploration of such ideologies in design.
Typography
Muli | titles, body copy, folios
The typeface, Muli, was designed by type designer Vernon Adams. This typeface is noteworthy for its minimalist style and for being sparing yet deliberate, just as this work was designed to commit to. Intended for use as a display typeface, I found that Muli was also a beautiful choice for the work’s sparing body copy and haikus.
Form
The three colors incorporated in the publication are pulled from Sanzo Wada’s A Dictionary of Color Combinations, the haikus were carefully written by poets I know personally, and the illustrations I produced were inspired by carefully chosen arrangements which I felt resembled their individual letterforms .
