The Sirens
Hark
The Sirens Hark is a monthly biographical literary arts chapbook subscription in collaboration with The Poetry Foundation, a non-profit which strives for the accessibility of the literary arts. Each issue of The Sirens Hark contains a thorough introduction and secondary sourced material about that issue’s featured literary artist, followed by selected works by the artist. Each chapbook is thirty-two pages long, saddle-stitched, and printed on recycled natural white cover and text weight stocks.
Typography
Berlingske Serif | body copy, articles
Berlingske Sans | specifications, captions
While the display typefaces of these chapbooks alternate depending on the artist being featured, the body copy and specifications remain constant as Berlingske Serif and Berlingske Sans respectively. The typeface was originally designed by Playtype in 2010 for the Danish Daily Berlingske, which is Denmark’s oldest newspaper. Chosen for its modernization, the typeface favors legibility without sacrificing style.
Form
Each issue of The Sirens Hark includes a continuous contour-line illustration of that issue’s artist on the cover and an interchanging display typeface matching the personality of the artist’s work. The chapbooks are inspired by issue no.1’s featured lyricist, Patti Smith’s own famous now-collectible chapbooks from the 70’s.
